Poetry
Growing veg
Growing vegetables is full of aggravation and pain
The bad back brought on from all the digging
Regular watering when there’s no rain.
That initial joy of watching a seed take
Is destroyed when it’s devoured by a pest
- “FOR GOODNESS SAKE!”
Self-sufficiency is the aim
Can this ever be achieved?
You quickly realise it’s not a game.
Trying to remain organic brings added stress
Mixing concoctions to kill slugs and snails
That continual fight for success.
But there is elation on seeing the cucumber finally grow
When so many have been lost
… row upon row...
Yes, the courgette, lettuce, broccoli and swede
Are all coming on in spite of it all
Watching crops flourish brings pleasure indeed.

Freedom (published by Forward Press in 2018)
What does freedom mean to me?
Well, when I was small it meant running from the top of a hill
With my arms outstretched, the wind behind
Running and running as fast as I could, until…
I so nearly flew - the fun and the joy
Of watching the birds soar high;
I’ve tried to copy this by flying planes
The thrill of looking down below from up in the sky.
Taking to the water also allows us to escape it all
Forgetting any troubles and seeing life’s rich tapestry
Different coloured leaves dropping in autumn or as the Yanks say, fall
Then I find myself thinking about the life of a tree
Yes it is planted to one spot - sometimes for hundreds of years
If left alone it provides a valuable home to animals and birds
Presumably it has no fears.
The older I get though
Freedom means escaping the shackles of debt
Which, at times, can make you feel frightened and low.
Security of paying off loans gives freedom
To pursue the rest of our dreams
To take up a new hobby or go travelling
Which enriches our souls, it seems.
And working for myself
Instead of being employed, provides me with the freedom
to make that necessary wealth.
